Learn MoreNegative News
Instantaneously, repeatedly, we are getting new as it happens: on phones, computers, radio and TV, Twitter, Facebook, emails, text messages…
The backdrop to our world IS bad news – climate change, pollution, war, fear of nuclear holocaust, germs, terrorism, financial failures, unemployment, loss of jobs, loss of homes, collapse of government, collapse different states.
The media reports on disasters in every little town in the world – making it available to everybody to experience emotionally — and those things are out of our control.
Just recently, for example, there were the floods in Australia and Brazil, the killings in Tunisia, the deaths in Arizona.
This constant bombardment of negative news through multiple sources impacts the psyche. It devastates us, because it’s human nature to respond by feeling emotion.
We can’t help it. After such a bombardment, we naturally begin to expect that when we walk out the door, we are going to be stabbed, killed, or involved in a major mudslide, hurricane or tornado. Those of us who carry our cell phones with us at all times, or work on the computer all day, receive especially heavy doses of negativity. (more…)
Learn MoreSex Addicts Fight Obsessions
Dr. Agresti was interviewed by WPBF Local ABC Channel 25 in South Florida. News Channel 25 asked Dr. Agresti, as a psychiatry expert, his professional opinion on the sex addicts topic.
“According to Dr. Mark Agresti, a psychiatrist at Columbia Hospital, ‘the difference with a sex addict is that it’s not an expression of intimacy, but an obsession about the act. The obsession about the act consumes the person. They spend an inordinate amount of time during the day thinking about sex, when they’re going to have sex, how they’re going to have sex.'”
Learn MoreArizona Shootings
I have been thinking about the recent Arizona shootings where Gabrielle Giffords, a federal judge, a 3-year-old, and a half-dozen other people were shot by Jared Lee Loughner. What’s going on here? How can we explain this? How can we prevent this?
I’m a psychiatrist. I’ve been one for 24 years. I worked on a mobile crisis team for four years in New York City. I went to events just like this where a mentally ill individual acted out and became dangerous.
Let’s look at some history in order to understand what happened here. In the early 20th century, we treated mentally ill people by putting them in hospitals where they would stay. Sometimes they’d get better and sometimes they wouldn’t, but they were kept safe, out of society and locked away where they were prevented from hurting others.
By the mid 1900s, new powerful anti-psychotic medications and antidepressants had been discovered. And by the early 1960s, we decided to close those hospitals where we had previously kept the mentally ill and, instead, treat them in community mental health centers with drugs like Thorazine, Trilafon, Haldol, Amitriptyline, Imipramine and Desiprimine.
That was great. For the first time in the history of mankind, we were able to take a lot of these people out of these mental health hospitals. (more…)
Learn MoreVideo Game Addiction
Recently, I took my son and four of his friends fishing in the Bahamas. We had a fishing boat at our disposal, a beautiful beach and great weather, and I thought we’d all really enjoy our vacation in this exotic environment.
But, two of the boys are addicted to video games. They brought the games with them and played them the entire time. They never left the hotel room on our five-day fishing trip. I was very concerned and told them so, but it’s a work in progress. Family members need to come together and confront their loved one who is addicted to video games – tell him or her, “Enough is enough. You are losing control of your reality. You are running from the world.”
We all know people who are in this boat…
With adolescents that I’ve treated it starts out innocently enough. The video game is just a form of entertainment. The most common ones I’ve dealt with are “Call of Duty,” “Gears of War,” and “Call of Duty Black Ops.”
What happens, though, is that these games start to take over, and the young people start playing them more and more. They stop going outside, meeting with their friends, leaving their rooms. (more…)
Learn MoreElectronic Socialization
The wonder of the modern age – getting to make long-distance friends with like-minded people — the Internet makes it so easy. You are safe in your home, and it doesn’t matter where they are – London, Dubai, Paris, but you connect, and it’s great. This new “friend” has your same interests, and, because of that, you share unique thoughts and feelings with them that only a few people in the whole world might care about. You feel like you belong and this new “friendship” increases your knowledge.
But I want you to know, you are entering dangerous territory. Electronically getting to know someone has great risks, so, when you enter that world, please think about what I’m about to say.
As a psychiatrist in West Palm Beach, I use Twitter, Facebook, Email, texting and cell phones, so I understand how electronic media works. Also, because of my work, I’ve seen how predators – sexual predators, murderers, rapists and pedophiles — have hurt some of my patients. I am aware of how dangerous the Internet is. (more…)

Learn MoreCelebrities Complete Disregard for the Law
While watching news and entertainment programs or scanning the Internet, I’ve noticed an amazing number of famous people getting into trouble with the law because of their addictions and inappropriate behaviors. Even when they’ve been caught, arrested and put on probation, they repeat.
The list goes on and on… Here’s a couple: Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears. These individuals, some people say, have a complete disregard for the law and think they can do whatever they like…
But that’s not what I think. As a psychiatrist, I’m thinking that when people do something where they know they are going to get caught, and they do it anyway, it’s not about a disregard for the law. They suffer from a mental illness.
These famous people might even be more prone to bipolar with manic episodes than others because they can perform at higher levels and do spectacular things. In many cases, mania allows for very unique thinking, which many consider highly advantageous in the entertainment industry. (more…)
Learn MoreCurrent Economic Situation and its Psychological Impacts
The current economic situation in our country impacts us not only financially, but also psychologically. We all know it because we can feel it, but there are not-so-obvious pitfalls that can be avoided if you know what and where they are.
We can navigate through this period and come out the other side healthy and happy.
Job loss, of course, presents money problems, but here’s another predicament. People who’ve lost their jobs suddenly find themselves with a lot more time on their hands. If they liked to come home from work every day and have a drink, they now may feel that they can take a drink whenever they feel like it. And they do. Too much. Too often.
You can see how they came to think like that, really. They’ve lost the structure that work provided, and without that structure, drugs and alcohol can play a bigger part – they’ve got the time and they don’t have to show up somewhere sober or drug free. So, this is something to be guard against. (more…)
